ANTONINA STEBUR. Art in Belarus. In Search of Origins of State Terror

24. Mai 2023, 19:00

Zeichen der Zukunft. Ost-West: Dialoge und Perspektiven

Nowadays, repressions continue in Belarus; there are more than 2,000 political prisoners in the country. Despite this, acts of resistance to the dictatorship continue in the country, as well as various forms of sabotage, and partisan resistance in the context of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. More than 100 cultural workers are political prisoners, and more than 1,000 cultural workers have been subjected to repression and violence by the regime. Art in these protest events plays a signifi cant role, cultural workers were involved in the revolutionary movement from the very beginning through a series of actions, transnational solidarity, understanding the origins of terror, the formation of networks of support and care. Important acts within the culture of Belarus are not only single statements of artists but, fi rst of all, collective projects, initiatives and institutions that marked the characteristics
of the Belarusian resistance.
