SASHA SKOCHILENKO. Art on Trial: A conversation with artist Sasha Skochilenko

7. November 2025, 19:00

FEAR LESS HOPE – Ost-West-Dialoge

Shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Sasha Skochilenko carried out an artistic intervention in public space. On March 31, 2022, she replaced several supermarket price tags with anti-war messages. Soon afterward, she was arrested and sentenced to seven years in prison. It was one of the first harsh punishments for antiwar protest in Russia. Her arrest and trial deeply moved both the Russian and international public. During her year and a half in pretrial detention, she recorded her experiences in an illustrated diary.

The curators of the exhibition FEAR – LESS – HOPE at DELPHI_ space, Katharina Grün and Margarita Augustin, will speak with Sasha Skochilenko about the meaning and impact of small acts of artistic protest, her experiences in Russia, and her new life in exile.

Sasha Skochilenko (* 1990 in Leningrad) is a Russian artist, musician, and author (including Book About Depression, 2014). She studied anthropology at Smolny College, part of Saint Petersburg State University. Arrested in 2022, she was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2023 and released in August 2024 as part of an international prisoner exchange. She now lives and works in Germany.
