FEAR LESS HOPE \u2013 Ost-West-Dialoge<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Armenia\u2019s collective memory is deeply shaped by the 1915 Genocide, which not only decimated its population but also defined the modern Armenian identity. The trauma of loss, displacement, and survival became central to diasporic narratives, while within Soviet Armenia, remembrance was constrained by political considerations. Commemoration \u2013 if allowed \u2013 was often reframed through the lens of state ideology, limiting open discussion of responsibility or justice. Despite these restrictions, the genocide persisted as a powerful undercurrent in cultural expression, literature, and private memory, sustaining a sense of historical continuity and national grievance.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the Soviet period itself produced a distinct layer of memory that both overlapped with and diverged from genocide remembrance. Soviet Armenia experienced modernization, industrial growth, and relative security, but also repression, ideological control, and suppression of national aspirations. The memory of Soviet rule is therefore ambivalent: for some, a period of stability and achievement; for others, a time of silencing and lost independence.<\/p>\n

\"\"Narek Sukiasyan<\/strong> holds a PhD in International Relations from Yerevan State University, where he also completed his MA in Regional Politics. He earned his BA in International Relations and European Studies from Babe\u0219-Bolyai University in Romania. He is a researcher at YSU\u2019s Institute of Armenian Studies, an adjunct lecturer at the American University of Armenia, and since 2020 has served as Senior Policy Officer and Project Manager at Friedrich-Ebert- Stiftung, South Caucasus. His work centers on Armenia\u2019s foreign and security policy, Armenia-Russia relations, and democratization.<\/p>\n

\"\"Anna Margolis<\/strong>, Wissenschaftlerin und K\u00fcnstlerin, wurde in Moskau geboren und lebt heute in Jerewan. Seit \u00fcber einem Jahrzehnt arbeitet sie zusammen mit der Menschenrechtsorganisation Memorial an Projekten, die sich mit Erinnerung, Ego-Dokumenten und der Kartierung von Orten des sowjetischen Terrors befassen. In j\u00fcngster Zeit setzt sich Anna Margolis vor allem mit der komplexen Vergangenheit Armeniens auseinander.<\/p>\n

PD Dr. Michel Abe\u00dfer<\/strong> ist Akademischer Rat am Lehrstuhl f\u00fcr Osteurop\u00e4ische Geschichte der Universit\u00e4t Freiburg und Fotograf. Er hat sich in seiner Forschung zun\u00e4chst intensiv mit sowjetischer Kultur- und Alltagsgeschichte auseinandergesetzt und ein Buch zum Jazz in der Sowjetunion nach 1953 herausgebracht. Gegenw\u00e4rtig besch\u00e4ftigt er sich mit der multiethnischen Geschichte des Schwarzmeerraums und seiner Wirtschaft und arbeitet an einer Studie zur Geschichte des s\u00fcdlichen Don-Gebietes.<\/p>\n
